Broken Toys Random Comments About Games and Tractors

Look, It’s All Fun And Games Until Someone Buys An Airline Ticket

Teen found after meeting his 42 year old WoW soulmate.

The teen was apparently unaware that the computer kept a log of his chats, and Ms. Kane read in horror as her son discussed meeting his much older girlfriend face to face and engaged in overt sexual discussions.

Ms. Price's Facebook page reveals a middle-aged woman with a large collection of friends – many made online – and a degree from Texas A&M granted in 1988, before Andrew was born. Police told Andrew's family that she had apparently struck up romantic relationships on World of Warcraft forums before, but never with a minor.

Clearly, the random dungeon group finder has gone too far.

  1. Someone needs to tell her that “LFG” does not mean “Looking for Grandma.”

  2. Oh, I have so many stories like this from my time on Thorium Brotherhood. Fun times.

  3. How could they post the picture of the 16 year old boy? What the hell is the matter with that website?

  4. Since there were no charges I suppose he is exempt from a publication ban. That is still a horrible thing to do to the kid, as if he didn’t have enough to worry about in his life :(

  5. It’s a Canadian paper. Their laws about such things must be different.

The woman didn’t do anything illegal. The age of consent is 16, the article said. And the kid told her he was 20. Creepy, yes, but not illegal. And we wouldn’t bad an eye at a rich 42 year old man with a hot 20 year old chick.

But this thing, this game…I understand there are magic spells in it. It allows players to summon demons. It’s the game’s fault!

  6. We need to see them so that we can continue reinforcing stereotypes.

He looks like the gullible type.

  7. Most ludicrous line in the whole piece: “Earlier that year, police rescued a 16-year-old autistic girl from California who was abducted by a man she had met playing World of Warcraft.”

Wow: pedophile matchmaking service since 2004.

And I like how they managed to get friending someone on Facebook to sound creepy.

  8. I remember life at 16 and would do just about anything to get some — especially from a woman who professed love and desire for me.

Of course we’re all aware of her faulty thinking here — given she probably has children older than him — but I totally grok his side of things.

  9. Still, is a 42 YEAR OLD WOMAN who took advantage of a 16 year old. Yeah, I said took advantage. Desperate guys will fuck anything, but an adult has enough maturity and awareness to live with the consequences. A teen doesn’t.

And it was major dick move of the Globe to publish his name. You can bet that if it was a young girl they wouldn’t have done it. But is a Liberal diary, and Liberals aren’t known for their mercy to men.

  10. i’d bang her for a purple.

    purple PENIS whoop whoop!

  11. Less an MMORPG thing and more an Internet chat room sort of thing, really.

  12. @Gx1080: They published her name and picture too; what are her neighbors going to think? I’m sure some local Fox affiliate in Texas will pick up this story and run with it, it has all of the necessary elements;

    - Evil games on the Intarwebz
    - Pedophilia, by US standards
    - Has plenty for “experts” to pontificate about

  13. @Geldonyetich: Yep, this sort of thing has been happening since MUDs or earlier; nothing new to see here folks.

  14. “And it was major dick move of the Globe to publish his name. You can bet that if it was a young girl they wouldn’t have done it. But is a Liberal diary, and Liberals aren’t known for their mercy to men.”

The Globe & Mail might be a Liberal diary in any other country but in Canada?! Holy shit you should read the Toronto Star

  15. “For more than a year, Ms. Kane said her son has played the game ‘every waking hour,’ and has rarely attended school because of the addiction.”

    That’s some fine parenting there.

  16. I suppose they will have to rename that to dungeon hoe finder…

  17. @Vaxhacker: Absolutely. But it’s all WoW’s fault!

My husband and I met in DAoC. He was 22, I was 41. 19 year age difference, but he was already in the military and living on his own. A 16-year-old high school dropout is a completely different story. The kid told the woman he was 20. While I don’t think it would have been easy for them, since I know such age differences aren’t, it may have worked. Sure, some kids are mature at age 16, but unless this woman just wanted a cheap screw, well… hm, I seem to have lost my train of thought. Damn fibromyalgia.

  18. These comments just got weird.

  19. Nothing wrong with true love.

  20. Ah, so she’s an Aggie. It all makes sense now. Human partners are a step up for them, usually it’s livestock.

  21. Enquiring minds want to know…

    What race/class?

  22. Isnt it a bit spiteful to post their names and pictures when the have not done anything illegal?
Apparently 16 is ok in Canada?

Sure sure, moral outrage and all that but it was not illegal. Frankly i find it EVIL to use media to punish what the law does not.

  23. Evil? Perhaps.

    Common mob mentality? Absolutely.

  24. “Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence.”

“Real” journalism has long since lost its way in favor of ratings or subscriptions or the like. It’s not shocking that someone would choose to print that which they knew would get talked about around the water-cooler and spike web hits/interest/etc.

  25. If a journalist is just doing whatever it takes to get him the most attention, the worst I can I can accuse him of trying to set a norm lacking in integrity.

When society has already made this the norm, I blame society.

  26. She was arrested once she got back to Texas for soliciting a minor on the Internet.

  27. I wonder how that would change if the boy was 17, as that would be above the “age of consent” in both Texas and Canada…
