Recently I’ve seen notes in a few places that referenced this post where I noted that I had been hired by NCsoft on a short-term contract to work with their Game Surveillance Unit, which has been doing a number on botters and RMTers and the like.
GSU is not on a “three month timer”. Even were I to leave GSU tomorrow, the team obviously is far more than I (and contrary to other postings, I’m not in charge of it – I program tools for them) and it is a longterm enterprise for NCsoft.
So, if you’re waiting to bot in Aion for three months until GSU goes away – um, you may have a longer wait. Sorry.

Good stuff, keep them suckers running!
Lum The Impaler.
“Lum The Impaler.”
THAT IS ENOUGH. He left his adult film career behind when he got married and it isn’t polite to bring it up here.
I won’t bother ranting here about Aion botting and RMT. (This isn’t the place for it.) Suffice it to say that they didn’t have anywhere near the staff they needed to deal with it when the game went live in North America. Sounds like dealing with the aftermath will be a continuing effort, which is good.
The team might not be gone after you leave, but I have a feeling the team will eventually lose effectiveness as the botters figure out new ways around the system. It may happen to coincide with your departure. You DO write the tools afterall. God help the poor fool who has to figure out your code!
I think you missed out on an opportunity to make your efforts seem excellent.
“Hey, after Scott left us, botting went through the rough! Damn that guy was good…”
On the other hand:
“Hey, despite 3 months of work, botting just went through the rough! His tools are useless!”
Still, easier to argue the first. People like obvious correlations.
Well surely the only tenable positions are:
if botting goes up after Scott leaves – what fools they were not to extend his contract!
if botting does not go up after Scott leaves – what a genius Scott was to design such effective tools!
Win-win, baby!
So even when three months have passed, be good for goodness sake!
Wait … so what about our dear Lineage II botting community? They need a good spanking, too!
Hmmm how about a poke at the spammers that make the email in CoH something you might use to contact people who aren’t on, rather than something you never ever open? That would rule.
Of course sending a tell to someone’s global name has the same effect, so it’s not really needed I guess.
It’s good to clarify. If they’ve not the sense to understand what’s wrong about botting in an MMORPG, they’ve probably not the sense to have understood this.
great to see NCSoft learned from their Lineage 2
