paul barnet should run for some office.
or start a new circus.
but I think he should get out of the “hyping MMOs” business.

It surely makes up for the past.
Maybe.
Or maybe not.
I couldn’t be arsed to sit through the first piece of dreck and I’m certainly not interested in watching Paul get all shirty about it.
Meh, if that’s genuine then at least maybe they do have a good environment over there, so good for them.

So…Colin is a hobbit?
Why does he have a frosted donut on his shirt?
Im not going to watch it. The guy is annoying.
Maybe Mythic should stop and think about how the old public voice of the company was Sanya and now its Paul.
If they can destroy their once sterling puplic relations so flippantly is it any wonder they have lost their way on game design?

I didn’t realize how close I was to Barnett overload. Let me check again here…
Yeah, definitely done with Paul. Please, make him stop.

*G* Funny stuff. It is just sad that they have to make a humorous video explaining that their last humorous video was actually mean to be…ahm…humorous.
And you guys should stop taking yourself so serious. You look like grumpy old men.
clowns are suppose to make you feel sorry for them as you laugh at them – I feel neither…
about 1 year ago
Yikes, tough crowd over here.
You people need to relax a little! It seems to me both videos were clearly scripted. While admittedly the first wasn’t amazingly funny (we all have our comic off-days), getting up in arms about the first and then still managing to take offense to the second – which was obviously meant to clarify the situation and lighten the mood – smacks of a bunch of people just looking for someone to pillory. Sheesh – we’re talking about a game. There are a lot worse issues in the world right now to get riled up about. Get a grip, people!
We’re talking about a man who has history in being unable to keep his mouth shut.
We’re talking about what is felt as belittleing and public humiliation in a work environment.
The fact is, for you it may just be a game, for some people it’s actually a job, you know, the kind of activity that puts food in your plate.
Get a grip and stop judging other people. Everyone’s entitled to have an opinion.

I thought this one was a lot funnier.

(I’m a sucker for the old pie in the face trick.)

All aboard the irony train!
This video was a lot better in terms of humour. It doesn’t make the last one any funnier, but Paul did apologise. Even though his original intent was humour, he did recognise that the first video may have been in poor taste.
It also clarifies their working relationship as a positive one, so I view that as a good thing.
People here just don’t understand this form of humour and appearently they don’t understand Paul either. Paul is a great guy, taking his job and himself serious in a non-serious-way.

Look at all you e-thugs trying to appear hard by saying how funny this wasn’t and how they need to stop. You’re like the Star Wars fans who have nothing but something negative to say for anything that doesn’t fit in their own personal Star Wars universe.
I’m sure he crushed you don’t love him.

It wasn’t that funny as a video, but it was pretty damn funny as a response to all the people who moaned and groaned about the last video. In general, I think people just need to lighten up.
the only thing I think we should have seen, was the whole coding team gotten together, and pied Paul. Just because that would have been funny too.
Lighten up, people.

I worked with Paul Barrett. I know Paul Barrett. Paul Barrett is a friend of … What? Barnett? Oh.
Senator, YOU are no Paul Barnett!
Whatever – he’s a dude that makes games. Why waste your time despising him?
Methinks the hatas doth protest too much. I sense some e-peen “look how insider I am” talking going on.
Don’t bother now telling me what a douche I am, my mother has already made it abundantly clear.

“Everyone’s entitled to have an opinion.”
That does not preclude the likelihood of many of those opinions being monumentally stupid.
Perhaps from now on Mythic should make an intro for their videos, like:
“This video contains humour, irony, sarcasm as well as bits and parts of Paul Barnett. If you feel offended by any of those parts mentioned above please stop the transmission now.
For those viewers that would like to understand the bigger meaning behind this meaningless nonsense we are just going to show you we also provide subtitles for the humour impaired:
Whenever you see a yellow dot in the lower right corner you will know that you just saw something that was intended to be funny so you get the chance to laugh at the right moment.”
Thank you
The Mythic Team

Well, at least it proves that the word “sorry” is in their vocabulary, even if it is only used to apologise to eachother, rather than the players who spent the last two months with the main system of gaining RvR rewards being completely broken.

Maybe they should’ve hired gilbert godfried?
Or better, maybe they shouldn’t have made fun of the dev in the first place.

The real comedy is in that Colin fellow’s deadpanning. Like slapping some pies on a guy’s face is all in a day’s work.

“We’re talking about what is felt as belittleing and public humiliation in a work environment.”
belittling and publicly humiliating to who?
they both seem hunky doory with the situation, so whats the problem?
i think what it is is everyone just wants to be a bunch of prude assclowns and keeping h8ing mystic.
even if it isnt funny to you, the least you could do is look at it with the thought of “hey, at least they are coming out and admitting what the problem is and that it actually is a problem, and telling you that there is a fix en route for it. they were even courteous enough to give the back story and meaningless explainings of the problem.
but no, what happens here? nerd rage takes off and you all end up looking like a bunch of pissed off 2 year olds who got caught sneaking into the cookie jar.

this just wasn’t necessary — any of it. That’s all. Just unnecessary.
they really should stop. It’s just creating a worse impression, particularly if you don’t know anything about EA Mythic or WAR.
There seem to be an awful lot of sandy vagina code monkeys here who can neither take a joke nor handle professional criticism in any capacity. Personally I thought the 2nd bit was pretty funny, and I wasn’t offended by the first bit at all.
It’s not going to make me go back to playing their PvE-based RvR game, though.
Also, if you don’t know anything at all about EA Mythic or WAR, why in God’s name would you be watching Paul Barnett vblogs?
thought experiment: imagine you know nothing of WAR or its drama and you saw this vid. That’s what I was getting at.

I are amused.
I think Todd has it right that it’s Colin’s deadpan expression throughout that makes it.
Amusing that they have Paul standing in front of a sheet of whiteboard paper saying “Common Design Faults” too
Anyone got one of those Blade-Runner rotoscope super zoom thingamies that would see what else it has written on it?
As I said in the other one, more use of Colin in the video and it becomes more amusing – the first one was too one-sided, which is why it came across the way it did to some people, I think. This was a much better use of having two people there, and as stated before, Colin’s deadpan way of handling the situation worked, in my opinion.
Paul’s personality is not to my taste, but I’m surprised that people manage to have an emotional reaction of any kind to a man whose every act is obviously meant to create a reaction.
At some point you’re responsible for your own reactions.
Funny. Funny as hell.
I found it amusing. I also found the first one vaguely amusing, but a bit cold. I can not honestly look at one man casually smacking another man in the face with pies and get upset with the seriousness of it all.
Bitter much?
It may be a surprise to you that many others outside of the game industry have software development jobs, and that yes, while the first video was a bit strained, the second was a good apology for the first.
Let’s not all take life so incredibly seriously and assume the worst in all situations. Give the guy a break, he made his apology and assuming his dev staff is satisfied with it, I don’t see why you should be taking further offense. Like you said – we’re all entitled to our opinions, are we not?
Wow. Is this really how wimpy most game developers are? They should try working in another area of business, where you get routinely savaged for screw ups as big as the WAR contribution system.
Incidentally, they can say all they want, but players have figured out the real problem with the contribution system. The problem is your actions have zero effect on anything. You get a random number assigned to you when you first load the zone, and that stays with you indefinitely.
You can test this easily by doing PQs or Keep Takes with the exact same group of people. No matter what people do differently, their contribution order will not change. I have personally tested this numerous times.
Keep 1: Bust my butt, kill tons of guards, beat the snot out of the door, tank the lord, deal AOE dmg to lord AND champs while primarily dpsing the lord, etc. Contribution ends up X.
Keep 2: Do nothing. Literally do nothing but watch. Do not take a single swing at a door. Do not fight anything. Contribution is still X.
