No, really. They said it!
When the Heavy Metal live event begins on November 17th, players who log into WAR will see a new tab in the Tome of Knowledge. Clicking on this tab will open the Live Events page, where each day we’ll place a new daily task. Completing these daily tasks earns influence, just like you’d earn in a public quest. There are rewards for Basic, Advanced and Elite influence, culminating in the ultimate prize: the chance to play WAR’s new classes a full week before they’re released to the public! This last reward won’t be easy to earn, and players who want to get to the Elite level will need to log in each day and complete on the daily event.
Not that, you know, anything else is going on in the MMO world in mid-November.

wow. so i get to grind in order to play classes that were supposed to be in release?
Every day I am more thankful that I let this one go past.

woot! I got laid off just in time it looks like. Thanks, Haliburton!
(And America’s enemies will celebrate all over the world)

I dunno, looks interesting. If these tasks involve open rvr, even more interesting.

My “free with purchase” month ends the day before that, and I’m not buying more time. Just as well, I guess.
Someone let me know if it’s worth re-upping for.

“wow. so i get to grind in order to play classes that were supposed to be in release?”
With such great examples of a basic lack of reading comprehension, clearly our schools are underfunded. Vote Obama… oh sorry wrong post.
The Heavy Metal name is, imo, a reference to a section in White Dwarf, a GW magazine about Warhammer.

Sweet.
Super sweet.
Totally sweet.

@5 I’m aquianted with the products of Games workshop, having a selection of armies including birtonian, gimp guard, dwarf (man-o-war) and tyranid (epic). And it’s ‘eavy metal! OI.
(IF YOU AIN’T ROKKN’, YOU IS MUCKKN’ ABOUT!)
however, the classes were ‘in’ the game until a few weeks before relase, when they were pulled, leaving some races without that class role. To be given such a great honor as to be able to complete extra special just this once quest chains to get access to these classes is..well…it just strikes me wrong.
The classes are not ‘new’ they were ‘held in reserve’ because mythic wanted to ‘get them right’.
Only people playing them and then gabbn’ will see if the delay was worth it.
(snide remarks about public schools (because only Gentlemen of Character and Means should require and education) and Obama (DEMONCRATS, AMIRITE?!) aside.)

@7
I have a guildy who was an elder beta tester and in the beta a loooong time and one of the questions he has had to answer (due to me and other guild members constantly asking) many times is about the missing classes. The knight and black guard were not “in” the beta right up till just before release then yanked at the last minute. The black guard was “never” in the beta, aka they were never happy enough with it to even let the players try it, and the knight was only in for a very short time before they made the decision to pull it months before release.
If after the announcement that they would be brought back in 1.1 I knew I was going to make that my main instead of my current class, I would be very happy to find out there was “any” way I could start the process sooner and catch up to the rest of my guild/friends/etc. is nice. If the unique content required to unlock that is fun even better.
My question is why require that influence grind at all, if the classes are good to go, just add them asap and the players who want to play them or want them around will love you for it.

8 is correct. I was one of the few who got to play KOTBS, at that time it had a run speed buff that was causing a lot of problems. It was a popular class in early phase 2 testing, it was removed in October of 07 and was never brought back in.
Blackguard was never in the beta.
#10 by coppertopper on October 29th, 2008
I think the reading for comprehension part was referring to the fact that you will get to play the new classes a week before release, not ‘do this grind or no new classes for you!!’. That seemed kind of obvious on the first read actually. On second read thru it looks like each level of influence earns you rewards – it’s not just a long grind for one goal.

I think if you wana make a political statement go stump on another post.
As for the actual subject I like the idea that they would prefer to get it right when it comes out. Rather than releasing it, listen to you people @#$!@ about it then finally fix it. Age of Conan has proven that it’s best to come out with something that is 90% functional rather than 40%. Because your game renewals will hurt from it.

Daily Quests! How did Pardo manage to steal that idea from WAR before it was even released?
#13 by dartwick on October 29th, 2008
How is this supposed to be fun?
I dont see how making an MMO mimic homework is a step forward in design.
#14 by glasseye on October 29th, 2008
I’m certainly excited. But hey, I’m a War fan since they have without a doubt the best pvp experience on the market atm.
#15 by Baktru on October 30th, 2008
I agree it is the best PvP experience, when you can find it. Good luck getting scenarios to pop outside peak hours on my two servers… Or getting the ‘less popular’ ones to pop at all.
But yah, I renewed WAR this week for three months. It’s just replaced EvE as my back-up MMO. We’ll see for how long.
#16 by Juppstein on October 30th, 2008
I have to chime in with 8. The KotBS was not even part in Beta3, which was the first realy beta phase were more than just a few thousand were able to test the game. So the majority of the beta testers probably never even saw the KotBS, aside from a few NPCs back then.
And about the event I just have to say that at least Mythics makes an effort to put a nice package around the release of those two classes. Other MMOs would just give you the new classes as an option right after the patch. So I think it is quite nice that Mythic is trying to put a bit more behind the release of those classes. I am all for timed events in MMOs and if in the end you even get added value in the form of content, all the better. Methinks people should just stop to see evil machinations behind such things and go out and enjoy the game. Because, after all, it is still just a game, i.e. something to have fun with.
#17 by zeal on October 30th, 2008
As for the “other” things going in November, sure its going to continue to suck a certain demographic out of WAR, but this is a great game that is tons of fun. People can continue to take swipes at it all they want, and the reality is its probably never going to even surpass the 500k sub threshold. My only complaint is they added another fluffy class to Order, and another badass to destruction.
#18 by D-0ne on October 30th, 2008
I’m so glad I wait 90 days to buy. I’ll get right on that daily log in… “Sorry kids! Daddy has to play War Hammer Online!” Fuck that.
#19 by Dirk on October 30th, 2008
regardless, its still a good game, and as Glasseye said, its the best pvp in the market imo. Unless all you do is scenarios, there still seems to be stuff to do so far in T3.
*shrug* re-upped and having fun.
#20 by syncaine on October 30th, 2008
So wait, now we are pissed because in addition to adding in two classes shortly after release (how’s that Hero class thing working out for WoW, you know, the ‘promised’ hero class system that would allow you to progress your character beyond 60? Oh right, 4 years and $40 late we get one ‘hero’ class) Mythic has also added a little side event for the release, and now we are pissed because we get a side event? MMO fans are unreal at times. If a company handed you $100, people would bitch that they got it this week, and not the week before.
The original announcement said the classes would be added in December, now they have come out and said you can get access a bit early if you complete some daily tasks. Can’t get the tasks done? Fine, you still get the new stuff ‘on time’, no worries.
#21 by Bonedead on October 30th, 2008
Well I missed the first one yesterday thanks to one of the parts in my new system being DOA. I’m just wondering if you have to do every single one to get enough influence for the elite items. Hopefully I can net enough influence still.
#22 by Turlow on October 30th, 2008
“As for the “other” things going in November…”
You *must* mean the release of Mines of Moria for LOTRO and the new legendary weapon system where your weapon has levels and gains exp and eventually gives you quests. HAHAHAHA! Of course you don’t mean that and are instead referring to that upcoming WoW thing. Is it just me or is LOTRO the red-headed step child of MMOs that everyone always forgets?
#23 by OZ on October 30th, 2008
It’s funny that I thought of LoTRO first, then WoW, but everyone else took to post 22 to think that…
#24 by Loredena on October 30th, 2008
That’s ok 22/23 — I thought of the expansion for EQ2 (Nov 18th) first, then LotRO. But then, I’ve gotten bored to tears with WoW twice now, and can’t bring myself to give them a third try even to play with friends.
#25 by Ben on November 1st, 2008
I am wondering if anyone could answer this question: In order to get the elite influence in the event to play the class a week early, do you need to be of a certain level requirement to even complete the dq’s for obtaining elite influence?
