A Programming Note

If your comment is “held for moderation”, that means the spam filter thinks it is spam. Most likely I will never see it, so if you want it to be seen drop me an email (sjennings (a) brokentoys.org) and I’ll bump it back into rotation.

As a general rule comments are never moderated for content. There are very few exceptions:

- obscenity (and it has to be really obscene)
- beating a dead horse (as in, a forum invasion flooding a months-old post)
- spam (“Hi, I run this consulting company and would like to link to it 30 times in this comment”)
- thinly disguised gold-farming ads (personal perogative)
- virulent ad-hominem personal attacks (and again, it has to be pretty bad for me to bother)

If any of this happens, I mark your comment as spam. Which means that anyone using Akismet’s spam filter will block you. Enjoy your stay on the rest of the internet. (Note: this is a joke.) (Further note: maybe.)

That last bit about Akismet’s blacklist sounds pretty creepy. I hope they have a good notification/appeals process.

  2. #2 by Scott Jennings on September 10th, 2008

    YOU ARE BLOCKED, SIR!

(No, actually, it’s a somewhat ironic response to apparently someone else who was hit by this.)

  3. #3 by ReptileHouse on September 10th, 2008

Damnit. Now I’m tempted to start making random attacks, porn link posts, etc. of gradually increasing obnoxiousness just to find out what “pretty bad” and “really obscene” boil down to. That’s far too rude to actually do, but dang if it isn’t tempting.

That is actually a rather curious point about Akismet. May need to go dig and figure out how that stuff actually works

I can honestly say, if I can post here 99.99% of real human can also.

I don’t know why people put down hominim so much – it’s good stuff. I like whole hominim myself as opposed to people who like hominim grits.

  6. #6 by Ashendarei on September 10th, 2008

Implying that you are not a ‘real’ human?

  7. #7 by Ashendarei on September 10th, 2008

Damn! one minute too late.. last comment was addressed to D-One

I guess it’d need more than one person marking somebody’s comments as spam, right? Either way, in the end it’s good that spam filtering got global. Comment spam got way out of hand, it was one of the main reasons why I shut down my old blog, back in the days…

But posting Naked pole dancing Scott Jennings videos is still ok, right?

    Alright fine. I’ll stop.

    BRING BACK PRECASTING

As far as I’m aware, it takes more than one person to get someone banned via Akismet. It’s like Google Mail, when you mark something as spam… if enough people do it, and the system detects a pattern, they’re toast. But based on one person? No, no matter how big the ego, one person’s opinion DOES NOT do it.

Were you aware that Akismet is a partisan spam filter? It blocked my reply regarding the Tigh/Roslin ‘08 ticket.

  13. #13 by Mark on September 11th, 2008

If a commenter sees ‘Held for moderation’ then it means just that – it’s not a spam issue. If Akismet thinks a comment is spam the commenter will see no message and the blog owner will find the comment in the Akismet section under Comments. It can be rescued from there.

If any problems are experienced with Akismet though do use the form at http://akismet.com and we’ll look into it.

Yeah anytime I include a link it gets held for moderation. I guess that’s the way it is nowdays with all the spam.

  15. #15 by wowpanda on September 11th, 2008

Yep, I remember I was not able to post a link to ca political news before.

  16. #16 by Skizo on September 11th, 2008

    Gotta love Akismet…

    Amazing filter :)

  18. #18 by Neep on September 12th, 2008

Well every comment I make gets blocked, but it never says held for moderation (I don’t think, this post is a check to see if it does) I wonder if there was someone at my company who was obnoxious and needed banning… or maybe I work for a spam company. That’d be pretty cool. Mild mannered surveying company by day, but come dusk when the doors close it’s Servers gone Wild! With “Performance” drugs and “member” enhancement for all.

So I was like talking to my friend and he was saying he paid that he paid $100 for 5 mil of UO gold. I said that’s crazy, if I sold that much gold it’d be for no more than $75 a pop.

He wasn’t convinced, if you agree with me please email me at f@rW3r4L|f3@benjamins.net I could use the moral support.

    Visa/MC accepted.

First time commenter, long time fan of Lum. You have no idea how much I miss reading your reviews and critiques. I’m glad I decided to google you, even though I only hoped to reminisce. Instead, I was blessed with the location of your new home, well, virtual home anyway. So glad to get away from nazi moderators, even MMORPG.com has fallen prey to the corporate dollar . Had a thread deleted which they warned me was trolling. BAH!

It was about Funcom, can anyone blame me?

Hey! I qualified for the “really obscene” rule! Rock! I should get bonus points since it was even in another language. :)
