I’m nearly positive that Star Destroyers are not capable of atmospheric flight.

  • Makaze

    @Soulflame
Way to take the nerd level all the way to plaid right off the bat :)

On another note what can I as a private citizen do to get the ball rolling on the construction of our new Death Star and make this a reality?

  • http://www.past4ward.com Tim

Hmm weren’t there ladned star destroyers on the ground in Clone Wars?

  • Sal

    @Tim
Those weren’t Imperial class Star Destroyers though Soulflame IS wrong.

Star Destroyers CAN and DO make planetfall, though instances are rare. Hell, I personally only know of one that’s ‘canon’ and one that’s ‘iffy’.

Canon: The Lusankya did, rising from Coruscant when Isard made her escape at the end of the battle for Coruscant. Granted, it had help and it was a Super Class Star Destroyer (think Vader’s Executor from Return of the Jedi) but the fact that it functioned in atmosphere indicates that the ships can fly in air.

Iffy: Starkiller (Vader’s Secret Apprentice from The Force Unleashed), brought down an Imperial Class Star Destroyer which was flying in atmosphere in a trailer for the game

    …god, I’m such a Star Wars geek.

    Welcome to Nerdville. Population: You.

    No kidding ;^)

In a real world the chance of a space ship flying in earth’s atmosphere is low. Of course there were a lot of scientists predicting nothing man made can fly (that was many years ago).

  • Fraeg

uhmm i thougth the video was pretty cool, it made me laugh.

the *debate* as to whether a not this could happen is right up there with the “who would win, Mighty Mouse or Superman” discussion of that grand old film staring River P.

  • Adoombrae

LOL… thank you so much for the link

    sincerely,

a star wars nerd in San Francisco.

  • Jobrill

I was waiting for the death ray to start charging up.

    hehe.

they overdid the Death Star but the Star Destroyer was awesome

I’m nearly positive that Star Destroyers are not capable of atmospheric flight.

    Famous last words, rebel scum.

  • That Chip Guy

Pshaw, Freeman. I didn’t see ANY of your vehicles in your former game flying in atmosphere. :)

  • http://mythicalblog.com Jeff Freeman

Er… well… they could there too, but terrain generation at those speeds made the programmers cry.

Anyway, ep3 shows Republic Destroyers in atmosphere, and those become Imperial before the end of the show.

The Force Unleashed media gallery also shows in-atmosphere destroyers:

But uhm, yeah, ok, I get it. ZING! Ya got me. :p

That’s ok. In SWG you can walk around in a spaceship as it is moving around in 3d piloted by another player while other players man the turrets… that’s so technically marvelous that I can’t take any criticism of the technical limitations too harshly.

And shots at bad game design would just be too easy, right? You wouldn’t hit a guy wearing glasses, would ya?

I saw that video just the other day. Its filled with all kinds of happiness.

  • yunk

omg you are all ignoring this is proof of extraterrestrial life! That video is far too advanced to be faked by humans.

  • Soulflame

The strongest argument against there being extra-terrestrial life is that we have not yet been wiped out by said extra-terrestrial life.

  • Drakks

Or that they’ve been smart enough not to let us know they’re out there.

  • Paul

Au contraire. Belligerent species would be too busy killing each other and inventing more ingenious ways to kill each other more efficiently (*cough* humans) to develop proper space travel.

  • yunk

Yes but for them to kill us is no more belligerent than when we call the exterminator to take care of our roach problem.
