McCain’s latest salvo at Obama:
It may be typical of the pro-Obama Dungeons & Dragons crowd to disparage a fellow countryman’s memory of war from the comfort of mom’s basement…
Someone needs to let Granddad McCain know that since he left the military in 1937, quite a few of today’s Generation Kill actually not only play Dungeons and Dragons – THEY PLAY MMOs. One of the things Sanya Weathers made a point of doing at Mythic (you know, when not disparaging McCain’s memories from her mom’s basement) was making sure that military DAOC players deployed to Iraq had all their subscription worries taken care of. You know, since they had other things on their mind and all, like bullets.
But, you know, it’s typical of the pro-McCain Sarsparilla and Goofy Golf crowd to disparage a fellow politican’s reputation from the comfort of Karl Rove’s basement.
Edit: Your VOICES HAVE BEEN HEARD from deep within Mom’s basement! Oh, and yeah, bring some Cheetos.
If my comments caused any harm or hurt to the hard working Americans who play Dungeons & Dragons, I apologize. This campaign is committed to increasing the strength, constitution, dexterity, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma scores of every American.
Clearly, this means that McCain is planning on running a Monty Haul campaign if elected Dungeon Master. Why, he’ll just give out artifact-level gear like CANDY. Plus, if Goldfarb was a REAL hard core arr-peer, he clearly would have pandered to Warlocks. But no, we have to favor those Christian Coalition-friendly Priests instead, don’t we? God, if only we could get some fiscal conservatives from the Elitist Jerks board in charge. Next, the McCain camp will say that our troops in Afghanistan don’t NEED fire resist.
Barack Obama was not available for comment, since he was busy being Chaotic Awesome.

Saw that this morning, sighed, shook my head, moved on.
The updated response is funny, but it’s also blatantly just saving face. It’s cute that he took the time to look up what would resonate with us (and I guess it’s something that he bothered to apologize at all), but please… it’s pretty obvious how he really feels.

I figure we can expect to see a whole lot of anti-gamer, anti-pop-culture FUD coming out in the next few months. And with the fairly wide age gap between the two candidates, most of this FUD will likely come from the elder camp playing against the youth of the other candidate.

You’ll note that he only apologized to working Americans who play D&D. If you’re unemployed and living in your mother’s basement, your still on his list. In fact, he said “hard working” so I think any part-timers are there too, or anybody who is just mailing it in hoping for a better gig in the future.

Does any one still remember 2000, when McCain was still cool?
#5 by Dieplskthxbai on August 20th, 2008
Does this mean that he didn’t fail his dex check?
:p

McCain isn’t REALLY REALLY out of it at all.
#7 by wowpanda on August 20th, 2008
I don’t understand why he automatically group all mmo playing people under liberals.

“I don’t understand why he automatically group all mmo playing people under liberals.”
I agree. Griefers and gankers are definitely neo-cons.

In terms of qualification for president “knowledge of Dungeons and Dragons” is not on my list.
#10 by TurdBlossom on August 20th, 2008
While “knowledge of Dungeons and Dragons” may not be on your list, I would hope “ability to resist unsubstantiated ad hominem personal attacks against constituents” might be.

Because if you have an internet connection, then you are a liberal elitist. John McCain doesn’t need (or have) a computer to entertain himself, and neither should you. A closet full of 1970’s era “Stag Party” mags and a tub of “I can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” is the way God intended basement dwellers to entertain themselves.
#12 by Talance on August 20th, 2008
Yet another reason to not like McCain. If only Obama had sensible policies and could stop playing the race card, he might be a better choice.
#13 by D-0ne on August 20th, 2008
McCain: You have become better at backpedaling!: 200
#14 by D-0ne on August 20th, 2008
Talance,
You wouldn’t vote for Democrat. You wouldn’t vote for a Democrat even if John McCain (R.I.N.O.) were running as the Republican presidential nominee.

I missed the part where he apologized.
Oh, was it right before the snarky part where he slammed D&D players all over again?
#16 by yunk on August 20th, 2008
I like the Congress= kobolds bit in comment 16 on Ace’s post.
#17 by yunk on August 20th, 2008
uh.. from reading your comments it seems not clear, McCain didn’t say any of that, neither did Obama respond. These are Goldfarb and other morons that work for those 2 saying these things.
#18 by Amber on August 20th, 2008
Yeah but if it’s said on the official campaign site, then “he’s John McCain and he approves this message.”
John McCain wants to take your d20’s away. Vote Obama for half damage.
(honest to god Scott, I’m so mad at you for picking this up before I did!)

campaign trail 08: NERDRAGE STRIKES BACK!!!!
#20 by Bonedead on August 20th, 2008
I don’t feel like this needs to be said, but ya never know.
You know he didn’t think of that himself, I really find it hard to believe he is that witty AND aware.
#21 by Noel on August 20th, 2008
Does this mean that I can hold Obama accountable for everything one of his supporters says? Because I’m fairly sure that’s the position he was trying to distance himself from with his reverend.
Just curious. I mean, I’m kind of neutral this election – it’s obvious that either will be better than what we currently have, but to attribute a blogger’s off-the-cuff remark to a completely different person is pretty lame no matter which way you try and spin it.
#22 by blachawk on August 20th, 2008
People are outraged about one of McCain’s worker bees making a joke involving D&D stereotypes. Many (if not most) of these are the same people laughed their asses off at the South Park WoW episode.
I’m sure all the hard-working, D&D-playing, Obama supporters are just as angry when people mock/disparage/question McCain’s very real hell-on-Earth experiences in Hanoi. Let’s not forget that the man spent years in solitary confinement essentially role-playing by himself.
#23 by Zubon on August 20th, 2008
“Vote Obama for half damage.”
I’m stealing that. Not on the blog, but still.
Blachawk reminds you: how dare you disparage disparagement by a man who works for a man who was a POW? Have you at last no decency?
#24 by blachawk on August 20th, 2008
^^ Because that was exactly my point. But hey, don’t let reality get in your way.
#25 by Talance on August 21st, 2008
@D-One: You’re right, I wouldn’t vote for a Democrat just because he’s running against John McCain. I would vote for one if he were honest, ran a clean campaign, and I could find some common ground with him. The only think Obama has going for him is that he’s honest, as far as I can tell, which is rare enough.
@Noel: No, only McCain is held accountable by the media for things his followers say, since the Republicans are teh devils. You didn’t get the memo?
#26 by Viz on August 21st, 2008
Man, everybody’s a dick now.
#27 by Anticorium on August 21st, 2008
John McCain being held accountable for the things that members of John McCain’s official campaign staff say on the John McCain campaign’s official website’s official blog about John McCain is like a slap in the face to everything Dick Cheney would’ve loved to fight for, but he had, you know, that thing.
#28 by Muckbeast on August 24th, 2008
It amazes me that people still slam D&D.
Hello folks, did you miss the 90s and the 22nd century? Geeks rule now.

If anything, the comments on this thread may help to illustrate why McCain (or his staffers, or his trained monkeys, or his robot minions, or whatever) might have the impression that people on the pop-culture gaming side of the Internet don’t like him.
#30 by Smalls on August 26th, 2008
I like John McCain, and I’m in the “pop-culture gaming side of the Internet.” I know that doesn’t make me “cool” or part of the “in crowd”, but it is what it is. For an office as important as the Presidency of the United States, I kinda would like to have an experienced statesman filling it. I also find nothing remotely beneficial or humorous in belittling the fact he served his country during a time of war. It’s not for everyone, certainly, but those who deserve our thanks and have earned, I believe, a modicum of respect that is currently lacking within the “hip” crowd. And yes, I’m a Democrat.
