We Fear Change

You know, when exporting your blog merrily to an 18MB xml file, Wordpress should warn you that you can only re-upload a maximum of 7MB. Just sayin’.

Anyway, upgrading to the latest version and starting fresh (well, as fresh as can be with 18MB of logorrheaic diary entries) to try to address some of the Dreamhost slowness which I am starting to suspect is, um, er, my fault.

Blogroll got lost in the move… eh, I needed to redo it anyway. Cute category icon hack needs to be redone or something. Everything else should have survived somewhat intact. Oh, and you frequent commenters may note a secret toy surprise.

Really… a surprise eh. Cool so when does the check arrive?

  2. #2 by Boanerges on June 5th, 2007

Tweety’s site is hosed. Heaven help you if that got lost too.

  3. #3 by Fricka on June 5th, 2007

Shall we start conspiracy theories about what else was in the other 11 MB that didn’t make it? ;)

  4. #4 by Apache on June 5th, 2007

too much unused space on the right

  5. #5 by Apache on June 5th, 2007

looks a little better now, but maybe put the stuff on the right as tabs on top and use more girth on the front page for stories.

  6. #6 by Apache on June 5th, 2007

now it looks like wired.com :)

  7. #7 by Malderi on June 5th, 2007

    Oh god, the pink.

  8. #8 by Angry.Bob on June 5th, 2007

Needs a little guy in a death robe as part of the logo.

  9. #9 by Freakazoid on June 5th, 2007

Pink and blue neon on greyscale?

Velcome to “Einleitung in eine Deutsche Kunst in den Achtziger Jahren”, vit your host, Herr Lumrich das Wütende.

  10. #10 by TPRJones on June 5th, 2007

    It’s FAB!

  11. #11 by Mist on June 5th, 2007

    Its a manly pink.

  12. #12 by Mist on June 5th, 2007

What gaming website was We Fear Change the motto for?

  13. #13 by Amber on June 5th, 2007

    I love the pink!

Let the nit-pick fest begin! (It’s good to be on this side of it.)

  14. #14 by Mist on June 5th, 2007

You also like Hello Kitty, I assume there is a connection there.

  15. #15 by Amber on June 5th, 2007

    Well…ok yeah.

Scott, you’ve gone this far. You might as well finish it up. This should help.

  16. #16 by Hkedi on June 5th, 2007

    ZOMGWTFBBQREDSCUREDSCU!!! WEB-SITE CHANGE!!!!!

    LOUD NOISES!!!!!

Seriously though, best of luck with the move of your virtual face.

  17. #17 by Scott "Lum" Jennings on June 5th, 2007

You guys know I’m color blind, right? So clearly my masculinity isn’t as threatened by the OMG PINK OMG OMG that is apparently frightening all of you. I switched around some colors. Let me know if the EVIL PINK is hiding somewhere so I can quash it and your gender security can remain intact.

  18. #18 by Apache on June 6th, 2007

The front page looks nice now, you might want to considering darkening the comments page a bit. maybe grey/brown or grey/darker grey.

  19. #19 by Aufero on June 6th, 2007

    Now it’s a manly… grey?

I’m not sure I can be sufficiently frolicsome without pink.

  20. #20 by Mox on June 6th, 2007

It looked quite a bit like “programmer purple” – 0×00FF00FF. My work has trained me to view the presence of that colour as the indication of an error.

  21. #21 by Please on June 6th, 2007

My only issue with whatever changes you’ve made is that the comment posts aren’t numbered anymore. Makes it more difficult to keep track of what I’ve read last in a 100 post reply.

  22. #22 by Abalieno on June 6th, 2007

Why don’t you just dump the DB on the server HD and then get it through FTP?

If you were doing a backup copy before an upgrade there should be no reason to import entries through xml.

My blog was 100 times more cluttered than yours or Raph’s (and plenty of DB queries), if it isn’t the traffic to slow it down then I wonder what it could be (my blog DB is around 70Mb, just saying).

  23. #23 by NAMELESS GUY on June 6th, 2007

LUM!!! I LOVE THE NEW DESIGN BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WHAT DID YOU DO WITH THE LINKS!!!!! YOU ARE MY HOMEPAGE!!! I feel completely disconnected now!!!!!! PLEASE PUT THEM BACK!!! ::goess off to try and google the link to the fohguild forums::

  24. #24 by Ken Sykora on June 6th, 2007

Toy??? TOY?? WHAT TOY?? Eh, it’s probably broken anyways. :/

  25. #25 by chabuhi on June 6th, 2007

I have to say, I enjoyed receiving your entire rss feed all over again.

  26. #26 by Igniferroque on June 6th, 2007

Can you tell us what you’re working on yet?

Are you really color blind or was that sarcasm?

  27. #27 by Scott Jennings on June 6th, 2007

No, can’t talk about work yet.

Yes, I really am color blind (red/green specifically).

Abalieno: I did, but the built in import/export util requires it to go through web upload. I tried hacking it to recognize a file on the server but in the end it was far easier to just split the file into 4 parts (past a certain point since it’s running in PHP the server would run out of memory anyway).

I’ll try to get the comment numbers and links added back today.

  28. #28 by Amber on June 6th, 2007

Let me know if the EVIL PINK is hiding somewhere so I can quash it…

    *pout*

  29. #29 by Mox on June 6th, 2007

Weirdly, each Scott Jennings post resets the alternating yellow/white post background. This does not seem right to me.

  30. #30 by ajeba on June 6th, 2007

    Looks good.

  31. #31 by Balasarius on June 6th, 2007

Hrm, now this looks like every other boring-ass blog on the Internet. :-/

  32. #32 by Calvin on June 6th, 2007

I’m glad you mentioned that Dreamhost is getting slow.

I’ve been fed up with Bluehost’s speed and stability and was considering jumping ship to Dreamhost. Now I think I have to accept that these cheap hosting services are never going to perform like a dedicated server, and that’s life.

  33. #33 by Simond on June 6th, 2007

“Shall we start conspiracy theories about what else was in the other 11 MB that didn’t make it? ”
Captain Ebolter’s true identity? CCP’s integrity? SOE’s plan to hardcode Vallon Zek? An e-pony? Hero classes? A miracle patch for Vanguard?

    The world may never know!

  34. #34 by OnyxRaven on June 6th, 2007

If you’re having performance issues with WP on DreamHost – you can send me a message. There are tricks here and there that help. Though I have noticed a few of the servers have been slow recently (including the one I’m on). The DH folks are usually pretty good with providing help themselves as well.

  35. #35 by Scott Jennings on June 6th, 2007

I have WP-Cache set up now, which *should* help. I suspect the mySQL server I’m on is dragging though. Dunno if it’s WP choking on all my blog entries, or someone else choking the mySQL server. Ah, the mysteries of shared hosting.

    I use 18.5million “conuries” a month. That seems… excessive.

  36. #36 by TPRJones on June 6th, 2007

It’s nice. But I miss the pink.

  37. #37 by =j on June 6th, 2007

Looks good. Needs more pink. (says the guy who reads via links) =P

  38. #38 by =j on June 6th, 2007

Just checking via firefox and the text boxes do no appear to have borders. kinda surreal, actually. Or have I blocked some cute AJAX formating thingy?

p.s. I like having a preview button, thank you!

  39. #39 by Zappa on June 6th, 2007

    Nice looking update Lum

  40. #40 by Hellfire on June 6th, 2007

Oh great googa-mooga. WHAT IS THIS PREVIEW BUTAN!?

Except it’s broken? I click it and I get “undefined” right below.
    :(

ahh, it worked that time. Interesting.

  41. #41 by Dren on June 6th, 2007

I just wanted to post so I too could see my name on the frontpage.

    Weeee.

  42. #42 by bullet on June 6th, 2007

How come Sanya’s site is still up? Not criticism, I just don’t know how the internets really work. I tell my kids it’s magic.

Also, no borders on the textboxes in IE, either.

  43. #43 by Soulflame on June 6th, 2007

    You’ll get over it.

  44. #44 by Apache on June 6th, 2007

unless you plan on having tower ads, you can probably budget more front page space if you want to stick to 1024x. That, or populate the right a bit more.

  45. #45 by Apache on June 6th, 2007

n/m, didn’t notice it was liquid (stretchy)

  46. #46 by Naladini on June 6th, 2007

    “I use 18.5million “conuries” a month. That seems… excessive.”

On the upside, a few years ago, conuries used to be the one big item that Dreamhost would zing people with for overages, at least that spectre isn’t hanging over you.

I had a similar issue with a phpbb forum, I posted on the phpbb support forums about the excessive conuery issue, and another dreamhost user showed me a quick hack to get query requests to share a persistant connection. Not sure if wordpress offers a similar option, but might be worth looking into.

  47. #47 by Fricka on June 7th, 2007

I said: “Shall we start conspiracy theories about what else was in the other 11 MB that didn’t make it? ”

    :: sheds a tear ::

Site’s looking good Scott. I missed your Pink Period though. Was it anything like Van Gogh’s?

  48. #48 by Psychochild on June 7th, 2007

Now I’m a bit sad I was traveling and not checking this site often enough. I missed the pink!

  49. #49 by Jason on June 8th, 2007

Definitely like the new layout, it has more life to it that the old one.
