Targeted Marketing Gone Horribly Wrong
As seen on Kotaku: Look Ma, that endless reputation grinding counted for something after all!
Although this is clearly just a come-on on the level of technical colleges that almost have real accreditation from something very close to a state agency, the Kotaku article’s comments include a link to Terra Novan Aaron Delwiche’s Trinity University coursework in eavesdropping on Night Elf cybering.
True fact: Before the whole web and MMO thing I used to edit video. Specifically for an advertising agency. Specifically for ads for those aforementioned technical colleges. My shining moment was when, for a half hour infomercial that was scheduled to show on some Fox affiliate in Iowa or something at 4AM, the head of the agency finally just couldn’t full up the time any more and threw the script at me and told me to write some. So I did!
Do you feel as though you are just a cog… a cog in a vast machine being ground down by the forces of life? Generic Technical College offers you hope. The hope of finally making something of yourself. And in so doing, you can help others, discover true meaning to your life, and be part of a wider world.
It’s some of the best writing I’ve ever done. And the actor said the lines with no visible irony whatsoever.

“And the actor said the lines with no visible irony whatsoever.”
Clearly a master of his craft.

Ugh, and here I am wasting my time on a graduate degree at a school that actually has, a campus and whatnot. My 67 undead rogue is suffering for the sake of what, a real education?
Ah well, I bet they make you play Alliance in that course anyway. Not worth it.

So your professors understand if you skip to go on that AQ40 raid because you’re up in DKP?

“A significant amount of class time will be spent in the game-world, but you are also expected to devote at least five hours a week to ethnographic research within World of Warcraft”
Overly developed high school girls, female teachers getting caught doing students and now this.
I went to school in the wrong era.

Amp — It gets even worse… The work created by some of these students has even been recognized as a stellar example of how to write a college research paper. For example, K. Davie’s paper on gaming addiction was reprinted in the book KEYS FOR WRITERS as a sample of what students should strive for when writing an APA-style research paper. And more than a thousand people download N. Nobel’s paper on sexual interaction in virtual worlds within a week of its publication on the class site. Other have cited the some of the student work in formal academic publications and conference papers devoted to the study of virtual worlds. Clearly, this is comparable to “female teachers getting caught doing students.”

This year’s class isn’t using traditional MMOs at all. Instead, we’re looking at the world of marketing and promotion in virtual worlds. See:
