Yes, But What Does This Ad Have To Do With Shadowbane?

February 21st, 2007

Finally, a revenue model for the still-actually-up-and-running Shadowbane:

The Test Server has been updated with a new patch. This patch includes the first update of Ubisoft’s new revenue model which contains an advertisement video when you log onto the game, log out of the game, and during the teleportation from death (resurrection screen). The advertisement video will not show more than once every 10 minutes so if you die a few times in a row within 10 minutes, you’ll only view one on the first death and then not till your next death that is 10 minutes or more from the last viewing.

“Feeling a little fatigued after your untimely gank? Try Ireikei Energy Drinks!”

Note: saw this on F13… can’t find any official confirmation but it seems legit.

Sounds like a strong incentive not to die!

Wouldn’t that mean that people will come to associate the product with frustration and dying?

What better reward can you get in PvP than knowing your victim has to watch Coke adds Nth time this day?

What puzzles me is adds on “log out of the game”, this just doesn’t make sense. People are not going to watch them and kill process as standard way to log off. Even if you could prevent users from avoiding these adds, and you can’t, adds will not work as intended and will be treated as annoyance that keep people from moving-on with their day.

I’m waiting for the day guilds are sponsored like NASCAR drivers. “This gank brought to you by McDonald’s”

There are so few eyeballs for potential advertisers that you’re going to get worse shit than what’s on day-time or late-late night TV infomercials. It may even be a straight dump of one of those weight-loss drug TV short spots (15-30 second spot) into some kind of streaming codec.

With the way people get sucked into MMO’s, forcing people to watch an ad on exit/logoff is a very bad idea. Faster exits are generally required, not slow ones.

Hi, I’m Don Lapre and I’m here to tell you how you can make as much as $50,000 a week just by placing tiny ads in MMOs…

“an advertisement video when you log onto the game, log out of the game, and during the teleportation from death”

Too funny! I imagine this model applied to my olde tyme days in UO: “When you use a moongate, when you approach the Brit crossroads, when you enter a dungeon, when you leave a dungeon, when you try to place a house, when you click on a vendor, when you utter the phrase ‘vendor buy a bank from the guards recdu recsu,’ and right before your CSR arrives to answer your appeal.”

Ubisoft has found a way to generate a revenue stream for Shadowbane.

Actually, as it currently stands, the respawn (death) and exit videos are identical, about 8 seconds long, and the respawn only shows once per every 10 minutes of play time per account. The intro movie is longer, 24-ish seconds. The current sponsor is Dell.

However. its not a big price to pay for a free MMO, and like some have mentioned, it does make for some interesting PVP trash talk.
