[...] Example A: Lum pointed a mad finger my way: This is mildly interesting in an SOE-watcher sense (one wonders how much commitment post-Raph Koster SOE has to a vibrant forum community, especially given the unrelieved anger of disenfranchised pre-NGE players) but more interesting from a more general standpoint. Specifically: is Cao correct? Are MMO forums so high-volume and high-noise that they are useless as forms of usable feedback? [...]

Yeah, and the Eve goon alliance has pretty much been branded by damn near everyone as a bunch of twerps. Justice was served. :)

Its a wrong assumption that noise in forums is a mere developer problem. In fact, the interests of developers and of many players are not that different as it is implied.

A forum which drowns in whining and flames must be rather (but not exactly) seen as broken as any part of the game itself.

J, uh...

I seem to remember the Eve branch of the Goons acting with much drama, calling out the biggest alliance in the game, making a banner which mocked a friend of many people in those alliances who died in a car alliance and then crying loudly when said alliance squashed their little empire.

Behave, right.

[...] A few comments from my friend Chris Cao have ignited a bit of controversy, with Lum and Raph chiming in, among others. Though I moved from community management to design a while ago, being involved in the goings-on of communities isn’t something you can ever really walk away from. Just ask the two guys to whom I linked. [...]

Kingdom of Loathing was founded and initially populated by SomethingAwful goons. SomethingAwful is remarkable because of its strong community ethic and stronger moderation. Goons behave, or they get banned.

[...] You might do as Lum suggests and treat it as necessary feedback: Necessary feedback? Probably. Filtering it may be more of an art than a science, but it’s something that a developer has to be aware of. If a good portion of their users feel disenfranchised, then that perception can become self-perpetuating, beyond any measure of reality. [...]

Caya, I for one have a MUCH higher tolerance level when I'm not paying for something and it's generally good.

Mistakes happen. But if I'm paying or it's one in a stream, I have a much lower tolerance level.
