Today’s Confusing MMO News Brought To You By Horizons

July 21st, 2006

….which has apparently been bought by… um… someone in Montana.

Yeah. I got nothin’. Sorry. However, I am encouraged by this friendly picture from the new owner’s website:

In other Horizons news, David Allen might hire you, if you’re supercore enough.

Woody at GU comics has a strip up about this. I can’t help but wonder at the light bulb and the very bad web design.

Why the prolific use of quotation marks? They are a “smoke-free environment”?

Is that anything like how I’m “a lion tamer”?

First saw the news on some MMO news site late last night(early this morning, sleep is for the weak!) and my first thought was “again?” and my second thought was “they still have servers?”

And i Just checked the website. *twitch* “Hot Game Action and Game Information Sites from E I “

From the EI Interactive press release:
Horizons has gone through a genesis, emerging today as a world class MMORPG providing a very stable and intrinsically interactive persistent universe for play.

How the heck do an established game go through a genesis?

I wonder what the sale price was.

Horizons has a long and melodramatic history. It’s not fair to criticize David Allen for the abomination that was Horizons. His heart was in the right place. David Bowman did far more to mangle the baby in the birth canal and produce what came out than DA did. I’d like to see QOL actually come out some day.

Something I’ve always been curious about, maybe you game people can shed some light on this… is Bowman’s career in games pretty much over after Horizons? He behaved pretty badly.

Well they changed the website a bit…. no more psychedelic lightbulb. I’m not sure exactly WHAT it’s supposed to be pointing at me now but hey it’s not psychedelic.

I’m giving up on Scotts crazy ass XHTML coding. Damn.

Anyway, yeah, “My god, die already.” is the thrumming response to this thread. Thrumming with truth, that is.

This news will change the industry as we know it today. I’m certain of it.

The lightbulb is still there, now he’s in a spaceship.

  18. July 22nd, 2006 at 22:52 | #18

Embrace the lightbulb. Taste the lightbulb.

In other news, the existence of another supercore team has apparently caused a space-time rift to open explaining all sorts of annihical mayhem such as wars breaking out, famine plaguing America, Valve announcing a real launch date for Team Fortress 2 and EA gutting buying Mythic. The return of Clhuthu is expected relatively soon so serve his Russian overlords.

The ORIGINAL Horizons would have been one of the coolest MMORPG’s ever. It had what, 13 races or so whith playable dragons, a huge world, race/faction wars, ect. It got to be too much to put together though. Classic case of writing a check you cant cash. The current horizons is an abomination of the original.

Demise was fun for a wizardry fan. Written in VB, used some god awful database structure to hold every single piece of game data including saves. But fun..
