Best just to end any coverage of these fuckers and let the veterans/bikers take care of ‘em without police intervention. In general though, I agree that giving these fanatics a microphone was the worst thing to do period. It just helps drive their subscriptions up.

You have two people who really aren’t debating a point, they’re shooting for “best sound bite” and that typically means you attack the other person and leave them having to defend themselves the entire time so they can never get a word in edgewise (James Carville is a master and perhaps pioneer of this technique). Makes you look like you won even though you never really discussed the issue. This video is a major case in point. Even if Ms Nutjob had indeed had a leg to stand on she never could have gotten that far because the reporter constantly attacked her. You’ll note she was on the defensive the entire time.

I guess for me, I see this as a conflict in freedom of speech. Yeah, these creeps have the right to stand by the road and spew hate, but people have the right to speak over the grave of thier kin in peace, too. On the whole, I don’t think that it matters too much just which piece of road they spew hate on, and one out of earshot of the cemetary would do fine. It is, after all, freedom of speech, not the right to a captive audience.

It’s not that they think the soldiers are gay, or that gays are directly damaging the military.
Their crazy-ass moonbat philosophy is as follows:
1) There are gays in the US.
2) The US allows these gays to exist, ie, does not stone them all as a matter of course.
3) This has angered God, who of course hates gays. (yes, THAT site is run by these people)
4) God is punishing us by killing US soldiers in Iraq and elsewhere.
They are really just a highly refined version of the same stupidity that Jerry Falwell spews on a frequent basis (and then rapidly retracts when people call him on it).
Fred Phelps has done more to damage his own cause than anyone else I can think of. Every time one of his people gets on TV, another few thousand viewers see the most ugly personification of bigotry possible, and public opinion moves a litle bit further away from WBC-types. So, thanks Fred!
It’s unsettling how closely the Rev. Phelps looks to both “The Tall Man” from Phantasm and “Kane” from Poltergeist. Giving them a voice can, surprisingly, be very benficial, as knowing this level of evil exists in the real world helps to affirm any truly good faith or dogma one might adhere to.
Very unprofessional, but pretty satisfying. I have to say, if there were protestors present when I was burying someone I loved, I would glady go to jail for assault. Actually, I would likely get off for emotional distress. While I normally agree with Gar, and it’s best not to sink to their level, some people just need their asses kicked hard.
