Notes from the Republic of Texas

- Most important observation of the week: apparently, 2 liter bottles of soda do not exist here. It's 3 liters or nothin'. I'm sort of befuddled by this.
- The weather's extremely beautiful. I'm told this is the only time it's ever like this, so am duly enjoying it.
- I still don't have my Internet feed at home (it's due to be set up this weekend). However, a neighbor of mine was kind enough to leave his or her wireless router unsecured, which I am being very gentle with. It's only fair, we have a neighbor who has, in the short time we've been living here, moved from asking my wife for a smoke every time she passes (which, oddly enough, is every time my wife retires to the patio for a smoke) to merely taking one as she comes by to say Hi. I guess sharing is popular. Who knew Texas was a communist society!
- Speaking of communism, this is on my wall at work. Thanks go out to Sanya's father, who is gamely serving his country in an outpost of the ex-USSR and brought back lots of kitsch.
- At work I've been on the job 3 days and no one has yet told me I'm smoking crack. Clearly they are not used to me!

The 3-liter thing threw me for a loop as well. After living 20+ years in Dallas, a year ago I moved to Austin and couldn’t find 2-liters anywhere. WTF?
March 9th, 2006 - 02:19
Lum, have ya been to the Saltlick for B-B-Q yet? That’s one of my favorite spots in or near Austin. And if it’s closed I DON’T WANNA KNOW!
March 9th, 2006 - 06:37
El Sol y La Luna on South Congress for enchiladas rojas!
March 9th, 2006 - 07:07
Maybe just maybe you are finally among people of equal insanity?

2 liter bottles of soda do not exist here. It\’e2\’80\’99s 3 liters or nothin\’e2\’80\’99. I\’e2\’80\’99m sort of befuddled by this.
Everythings bigger in texas?
March 9th, 2006 - 09:47
Curra’s on Oltorf is also completely awesome. They have (had?) these awesome pecan enchiladas. Plus, avocado margaritas (which sound horrid but actually taste great).
Oh and pancakes at Kirby Ln…
I miss Austin. Stupid job market. Stupid Houston for having a better job market
March 9th, 2006 - 11:04
It’s got to be an Austin thing, then. 2 hours north of Austin, at Wal-Mart, we have nothing -but- two-liters. No 3s at all. Granted, last time I was down there, for AGC, I didn’t look for any two-liters, either.
March 9th, 2006 - 12:22
What does the flag say? A quote from V.I. Lenin, I assume?
March 9th, 2006 - 13:05
You should go site seeing to the old buildings where gaming companies used to live. Like Origin System’s old building or ION Storm’s hangout.
Snatch a 3 liter, some burritos, to go, and make it day of fun and sun!
March 9th, 2006 - 13:23
I’ve been to the river walk, but I was so drunk I may as well have been in Seattle for all I remember.
My cousin works for the Texas Rangers, maybe we could all drive/fly to Arlington and take over the stadium for Lummies night. Free Fallen Age CD to the first 30,000 fans!
March 9th, 2006 - 15:20
Are you sure you want to have “We will come to the win of the communist hard work!” (literal), “The communist hard work will prevail” (paraphrased) on your wall?
March 9th, 2006 - 17:09
I think “Communist hard work for the win” would be a more-apt paraphrase.
March 9th, 2006 - 17:32
East Side Cafe
Texadelphia
Posse East (featured in the Clash’s Rock the Kasbah music video)
Juan in a Million (best breakfast taco ON THE FREAKING PLANET)
and many others.
Salt Lick…. i dunno. Long ass drive. No b33r. Soup Nazi attitude. All you can eat, yes. But with a time limit. The BBQ is good, but not that good.
March 9th, 2006 - 18:12
there’s now a salt-lick on 360 south of the bridge at Davenport Ranch

Maybe it’s worse up here around Dallas but bah

Everyone’s nice to you the first week or so. Give it a bit, then the knives will come out.
Have fun,

“We are advancing to victory through Communist labor.” Which he won’t do as long as he’s smoking the crack.
March 9th, 2006 - 23:16
He hasn’t had the chance to taxi to victory yet.

Does the Countyline still have good barbeque? I miss SW food. Here in northern europe about all we can get of Tex-Mex is a few tocos.
Taxi to victory ftw thru comminust labor!
March 10th, 2006 - 11:12
Countyline is good, but a bit spendy. If you need good cheep BBQ. Go to Rudy’s.
March 10th, 2006 - 22:52
After you finish all that eating, you might take a walk around the grounds of the state capitol there, and see if you think that the rearing horse and rider of the ‘Texas Cowboy’ aren’t in that spot because of what is between the horse’s legs. Laughed my ass off when I saw it, but it was hot and I’d been walking quite awhile, so it might just have been heat stroke or oxygen deprivation.
March 11th, 2006 - 21:56
Salt Lick, Salt Lick, Salt Lick. The orange sauce is overrated, and it’s not worth the drive out.
Stubb’s BBQ is much better. The meat and the sauce are both excellent. I even prefer Green Mesquite BBQ over Salt Lick.
March 13th, 2006 - 12:24
Tweets — you’ve just elevated my estimation of your coolness by having a father in the ex-USSR bringing you flags. Coolness or Hawtness? I dunno…it’s elevated something…
