Top 10 new games of 2005
(at least in my humble opinion). Everyone else is doing this list, so I will too! (No MMOs included.)
10: F.E.A.R.: Best shooter of last year. Well done atmospherics and the AI was really well done (or at least it reponded well to my cheesy hide-behind-a-wall-and-ambush-people with the classic throw-lots-of-grenades response!)
9: Dawn of War: Winter Assault: Yeah, it’s an expansion pack, bite me. With AOE3 still needing lots of work, this one is still the best online RTS out there. If people weren’t so cheesy with the Imperial Guard in online games this would be higher on the list. Yes, commissar, I’m looking at you.
8: Indigo Prophecy: Flawed near the end, but the game makes up for it in atmosphere. Very cinematic, yet still feels as though it gives you choices that matter (even though they don’t!) Plus adventure games are supposed to be dead so it’s nice to see one that isn’t.
7: Final Fantasy IV Advance: It’s FF4. On a GBA. And you don’t have to run some wacky emulator program! Now when they get FF6 on a GBA I’ll probably never use my PC for a year or something.
6: God of War: Unlike others I don’t think this is QUITE god’s gift to gaming, because I *hate* jumping puzzles, but the fact that a game full of jumping puzzles made this list should say something. Great art, great story, and great jumping around mutilating things with swords.
5: Guitar Hero: Just plain fun. Plus they have all kinds of 70′s songs that this old man actually remembers and stuff.
4: Mercenaries: It’s Grand Theft Auto: North Korea and that’s all you need to know.
3: Knights of the Old Republic 2 (pretty sure this was a 2005 release – at least the PC version was): This is where RPGs need to go. Meaningful branching choices, NPCs you actually sort of care about, and an ending that wasn’t finished. OK, so that last part? We can skip. But this game would have been dead-on perfect if not for the painfully obvious crap-we-gotta-ship-this-thing-NOW ending. Did the fans ever fan-patch this one yet?
2: Hearts of Iron 2: This IS the penultimate World War 2 strategy game. If you disagree, you are wrong. End of story. I played this more than any game has a right to be played. When CORE comes out? I’ll play it more. When the expansion comes out? I’ll play it even more! Woo hoo!
1: Civilization 4. DUH. Out of the box it’s unbelievably addictive. The multiplayer is painless to set up and far, far more fun than it has any right to be. It’s Civ. It even has Leonard Nimoy intoning “I got pig iron. I got pig iron. I got ALL pig iron.” What more could you want out of life?

Civ4 and Dawn of War (WA) are two of my recent favorites. If you liked xcom also lookup UFO:Aftershock and its predecessor UFO:Aftermath if you’re inclined.

Having recently read the great book Poland by James Michener and extensively played HoI2 – When my children are old enough, I plan to have them play HoI2 with me and discuss the socio-economic position of each of the relevant participatory countries at the dawn of WWII.
That simple opinion/plan tells you how good a game/simulation I think HoI2 is.

Once I finally got Civ 4 running I haven’t been able to stop playing. I loved Civ 2, but was not fond of 3 at all, so I’m really happy to find how good this one is.
Really pretty buggy though, and my computer is way beyond what they require. The latest patch helped a lot, and turning down some of the features helped a lot.
Boy, this is a great game.

HoI 2 is the “penultimate”? What’s the ultimate going to look like?
WW2 doesn’t hold me the way that earlier periods do, but Doomsday will certainly be on my buy list.
And yet another voice for Civ 4. This is turning into a landslide. Hope Soren Johnson asks for a raise.

FF4 mmm… I never played that one. Wasn’t it FF6 that was released in the US as FF3 in the 90′s?
I’m still waiting for Square to get off of their asses and put Chrono Trigger on the GBA/DS. Grr.

What…. no Vampire: Bloodlines?

You forgot at least “Silent Hunter III” and “Rag Doll Kung Fu”.
Or at least those would be on my list.
There should be separate lists about consoles and pc gaming, or it’s too messy (Katamary Damacy was 2005?).
Btw, is there somewhere a complete list of “Stuff” released along the whole year? Finding the most trivial and useful things is hard on the Internet.

KOTOR 2 Restoration Project- http://www.team-gizka.org/
Looks like it’s coming along nicely.. Lots of missed potential in that game, hopefully to be redeemed.

My friend was quick to point out that Civ4 could have been better given the following:
Also, I’m a bit disappointed that the American leaders to choose from were Washington and Roosevelt. Obviously, our most popular leader in American history has been Hulk Hogan! I could imagine him dealing with other world leaders with the flag draped behind him…
“Whatcha gonna do, Brother, whatcha gonna do, when my Animal Husbandry techonolgy runs wild, over you?!”
Then maybe Mr. T could be our Civilization Specific Unit.
Otherwise, I’m down with Civ4… it being the only game on the list that I have played this year.

Personally, I like it when Nimoy says, “Beep, beep, beep.”
But, anyway, yeah, I had to drag myself away from Civ IV, so I can finish up this product I’m trying to ship. D’oh. What made me think I had free time! If only I could use laptop power jacks on all planes, I’d never notice the time passing ever again.

The Nimoy voice acting is the best part.
As for the rest of the list, cannot confirm, been playing WoW all year.

I have Civ4 and it’s pretty good, but there’s a couple games I would have on my list above it as I play it as a 3rd or 4th game.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted. Fun fun race game. I just completed the “carreer” and now I’m doing the challenge series. Only played it online a couple times and didn’t like it mostly because I hadn’t unlocked the “good”cars everyone else was using. Now I’ll have to go back for some revenge!
Battlefield 2: Not much of a single player game, but also not an MMO. I like that you can “advance” in this war game, and the game is super fun to play online. The expansion (Special Forces) totally stinks though.

Shadow of the Colossus isnt too bad!

How about Ultima 5, completely remade using a heavily modified Dungeon Siege engine? It was released right before Christmas (for free, although you need Dungeon Siege to play).

I can’t stop playing.

Sounds more like Hearts of Iron 2 was your game of the year
